Microsuction is a procedure that uses gentle suction to remove built-up excessive wax. In simple terms, it refers to earwax removal. The process usually involves a low-powered suction device that gently loosens the accumulated wax.
The procedure takes a few minutes in each ear and the prior use of additional wax softening oils or products is not necessary. The process is widely known to be very effective, quick, painless and syringe free. A video otoscopy can also be carried out for live updates on the procedure and so you can see the results of the microsuction.
Firstly, we will examine the ear to determine the extent of your problem using both a pair of binocular microscopes, and video otoscope. We can then discuss and then explain the procedure to you.
The removal of the wax is carried out using a microscope, (which allows greater depth-perception and magnification), and light which enables the ear canal to be seen clearly at all times during the procedure, this is one of the reasons why it is so safe.
While looking down the ear canal we use a very fine sterile probe to vacuum out the wax, the most you should feel is a gentle pulling sensation as the wax is removed from the canal. The technique means that we can avoid touching the skin of the sides of the ear canal which makes the process a lot more comfortable. The vacuum pump itself is very gentle.
Finally, we can check the condition of your ear canal and ear drum, using the video otoscope. Microsuction is by far the most effective and safest way of cleaning blocked ears.
Microsuction is more effective than common alternative treatments such as ear syringing, and irrigation which uses a jet of water to try and dislodge wax build ups. As well as removing more wax, microsuction is not associated with the same potential side effects of syringing such as infection and tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
